About The Role

How we implement IT is an essential part of what makes us successful at Blue Zoo. We’re looking to welcome a Senior Systems Administrator to the team to support us in delivering our projects and solutions. We are very happy to discuss flexible, hybrid and remote working options for all our vacancies.

As Senior Systems Administrator you will be working primarily with the Head of IT and one other Systems Administrator. You’ll also work with the 2D & 3D pipeline teams and the IT Support team.

The primary focus for the Senior Systems Administrator will be to complete a diverse range of projects. These projects will improve platforms, security and user experience. This role will involve troubleshooting, documentation, and sharing and transferring knowledge. 

Time will be spent on R&D. Some of the projects that have and will continue to be worked on are:

  • Cost-effectively moving workloads to the cloud
  • Helping to implement emerging animation technologies such as Unreal and blender
  • Investigating and deploying storage caching solutions to enable seamless experience between users at remote sites or hybrid cloud

Day to Day:

  • Project planning in conjunction with the Head of IT.
  • Schedule changes appropriately and provide daily updates on progress
  • Lead security audits and plan remediation of issues found.
  • Provide advice and planning to bring systems in line with best practice.
  • Support the team with advanced troubleshooting when required.
  • Share knowledge of changes, steps taken etc.
  • Endeavour to constantly be aware of, and minimise, energy use and carbon footprint, to help the studio reach our goal of carbon neutrality by 2030.
  • Always be inclusive and supportive of your colleagues to match the studio’s values of inclusion and opportunity.
  • Research into ways to move the studio’s user experience & technology forward

About You

Must Have:

  • Worked within animation, VFX or games industry previously.
  • Understanding of Active directory & Group policy.
  • In depth knowledge of Linux (CentOS and Ubuntu primarily)
  • Troubleshooting and configuration of Samba.
  • DB Administration and configuration (MySQL/MariaDB/MongoDB) including user management, queries and updates.
  • Experience with VMware (ESXi, vcenter)
  • Proficient in scripting (Python, Bash, Powershell).
  • Confident monitoring systems configuration.
  • Ability to instil trust and respect within the team, provide strong team mentorship to increase productivity.
  • Encourage team development through giving accountability and delegation.
  • Encourage collaborative team approach.
  • Extremely strong problem solving skills devising elegantly creative solutions or work-arounds.
  • Ability to learn new tools quickly.
  • Extremely good organisation skills when juggling multiple projects and priorities belonging to different stakeholders.
  • Very clear, efficient and effective communication skills.
  • Maintain a proactive and positive approach when resolving issues under pressure.
  • Excellent English writing skills for creating and reviewing easy to understand documentation.

Bonus Points:

  • Troubleshoot both 2D and 3D pipelines.
  • Understanding of implementation CI/CD or devops practices.
  • Ability to use Wireshark to diagnose software issues (primarily with storage.
  • Configuring and troubleshooting switches (Layer 2/3).
  • Implement storage workflows (caching for remote sites, archive, backup).
  • Experience with cloud providers.
  • Planning and deployment of configuration management.
  • Manage and configure containerisation solutions.
  • Assess and deploy secrets management & distribution.
  • Troubleshooting and securing web servers (apache, nginx).
  • Configuring and troubleshooting BSD (TrueNAS and pfsense).
