About The Role

Specialisms: Lighting, Surfacing and Compositing 

 

As an experienced Look Development artist you will get the opportunity to work across many different projects in a variety of styles within the 3D animation medium.

 

This is an exciting role which involves being at the forefront of visual development on our projects and pitch work. We’re looking for a passionate individual who loves character animation and is highly skilled within the 3D Look Development role including texturing, surfacing, groom and lighting. 

 

We are looking specifically for someone with more experience and interest in the lighting discipline to complement our existing skillsets within the team.


Day to Day:


  • As a key senior artist working closely with our department heads, managers and directors, you will provide innovative visual and technical solutions to meet a given brief.
  • Be an essential part of brainstorming, and offer integral suggestions for the design and implementation of new R&D goals that provide an opportunity to create unique, high end projects.
  • Work collaboratively and flexibly with other departments across the entire studio, and be adaptable to making changes as and when required.
  • Create the final look of developed assets with minimal supervision and within the studio pipeline through artistic vision and ingenuity.
  • Identify and establish solutions and approaches to solve challenges without guidance.
  • Use excellent time management skills to schedule meetings and tasks effectively, and manage time and resources to meet weekly targets.
  • Assist in developing high quality shading and lighting setups for establishing all aspects of Look Development.
  • Work with our Development, Productions and Commercials teams to suggest the most suitable solution for any given brief. Including assigning the work to the strengths of the individuals within the Look Dev team.
  • Attend dailies, reviews, and team meetings as required.
  • Work closely with Lead Look Dev Artists, Lead Lighting TDs and supervisors to ensure that all setups work within the scope of production pipeline requirements.
  • Work hands-on with a team of super talented artists to ensure technical and artistic brief is met and help train and guide more junior member of the team
  • Strive to push the quality of visuals created at the studio through R&D of new workflow and practice, including the sourcing of and training in new software and tools. 

About You

Must Have:

  • Excellent time management skills with demonstrable experience of meeting schedule deadlines while maintaining the highest level of work quality.
  • Proven ability to prioritise tasks and provide accurate time estimates on completion of tasks or scope of work.
  • Effective communication skills, able to receive and give direction with clear, actionable feedback.
  • Have experience leading a team and the ability to support and teach less experienced artists.
  • Demonstrate an excellent eye for detail, colour sensibilities and advanced lighting.
  • Enthusiastic and self-motivated problem solver who can steer and support the team across a variety of projects. 
  • Great presentation skills and ability to communicate creative and technical ideas as well as what has been accomplished and what is yet to be addressed in reviews and meetings.
  • Ability to pick-up new techniques and to learn new software quickly and effectively.
  • Skilled in Maya and highly proficient in technical issues, with experience in Redshift, Arnold or similar renderer.  
  • Experience with modelling software and workflow with use of Zbrush, Maya or similar
  • Experience with texturing software and workflow such as Mari, Photoshop, Substance etc.  
  • Good knowledge of a compositing package such as Nuke or similar 
  • Understanding of the modelling, UVing and texturing workflow 
  • Experience using various scripting languages such as Python and Mel

Bonus Points: 

  • Interest and abilities in 3D sculpting or modelling 
  • Experience with groom plugins such as Ornatrix, Xgen, Yeti etc
  • Excellent troubleshooting/debugging skills
  • Traditional art including drawings or paintings, sculpting, photography etc. 
  • Experience with C/ C++ or some other object-oriented programming language
