About The Role

Our Lead surfacing artists create materials with intricate details for our environments, props and characters that allow worlds to come to life, and add the charming details that make our stories believable. They also support their team members and lead by example, making sure their entire team is delivering consistently high quality assets. 

Your day-to-day will focus on creating detailed, stylised materials  based on informative concept designs, whilst meeting production deadlines and that all important brief from our Directors, Art Director and Clients. 

This role requires the hired candidate to be based in the UK, outside of London (outside the M25).  We would like to highlight that the hired person in this role may be required to work part or full time at one of our Regional Studio Hubs (to be confirmed). This role will also report into one of our Regional Studio Hubs.

Day to Day:

  • Creating materials with intricate details, texturing and shading stylised assets.
  • Creating materials both procedurally and hand painted.
  • Contribute to the surfacing library to be used throughout the production.
  • Effectively realising a 2D concept through to 3D, as well as being able to work with minimal design.
  • Editing UVs on assets to work effectively with the materials and republish those models.
  • Communicating closely with the modelling team for additional maps needed for displacement and model updates. 
  • Editing materials on a shot to shot basis.
  • Leading a team of surfacing artists, and regularly communicating between our Modelling Department, CG Supervisor, Directors and Art Directors.
  • Delegating and managing your team’s assets and time efficiently to meet deadlines.
  • Responding positively to, and acting on notes and feedback from your CG Supervisor, Director, Art Director and Client. .
  • Giving constructive feedback to improve asset quality across the team. 
  • Communicating with and responding to other departments to manage any fixes and notes, especially from our Modelling and Lighting Departments.
  • Responsible for training the new team members on the project and studio pipeline.
  • Initial approval of your team’s assets before they are passed on to the CG Supervisor, Art Director and Directors. Assisting our CG Supervisor with surfacing asset problem solving, both creatively and technically.
  • Producing tests for the exploration process.
  • Reporting to your Production Manager and CG Supervisor if there are any issues to flag that would affect the schedule. 
  • Accessing and breaking down the surfacing workload into required bid days and the schedule.

About You

Must Have:

  • Extensive demonstrable animation production experience
  • Interpreting surfaces s from concept designs
  • Knowledge of UV Mapping and displacement maps
  • UV mapping with either Maya or UVLayout
  • Texturing assets using either Substance Painter, MARI or Photoshop
  • Knowledge of Substance Designer
  • Strong understanding of how materials react to light.
  • Creative problem solving
  • Work independently and manage a team, leading by example.

Bonus Points:

  • Previous production experience in a Lead role
  • Experience working with modelling tools both in Maya and Zbrush
  • Knowledge of clean topology
