About The Role

As Lighting and Compositing Supervisor you are responsible for managing a team of wonderful visual storytellers and excellent motivators. You’ll lead your team in defining the mood and atmosphere of our narratives, and highlight the charming details of our characters, props and environments. You are a savant of light, colour and creative problem solving. 

You will be in charge of the lighting and compositing on a preschool 3D animated TV series, responsible for ensuring the lighting and colour continuity between shots, as well as creating the master shots through to delivery of the final shots, to the client. You will be a strong communicator with all the departments of the production to ensure you meet delivery deadlines. Responsible for delegating the workload across your team, coaching people to the best of their ability will come naturally to you, whilst remaining approachable you will be a decisive, supportive and collaborative leader.


Day to Day:

  • Looking after R&D for 3DFX/episode-specific challenges to ensure problems are fully tested and approved by the director
  • Assigning tasks and shots to the lighting teams
  • Checking the episodes/shots to ensure they have achieved the required look
  • Arranging daily catch ups with your team to make sure they are on track and aware of their daily tasks, and sharing notes from the client with the team via Ftrack
  • Managing your team efficiently to meet the deadlines for the production. 
  • Working closely with the Production Manager to ensure the lighting and compositing schedule is adhered to, flagging to the Production Manager in advance if there are any potential issues and finding solutions to this together
  • Meeting regularly with the director and the art director to ensure creative vision is maintained, whilst remaining responsible for quality control across your team's episodes, and making sure the episodes are presented neatly and to the high standard of the production
  • Preparing master shots for the following episode to then get them approved by the director, art director and client
  • Managing all aspects of your team, including holiday cover, training, development and reviews
  • Communicating with leads on the team’s performance, flagging any concerns on performance or mental health to the Production Manager 
  • Arranging tutorials/training meetings as and when required
  • Arranging and leading episode briefings with lighting and compositing reviews
  • Collecting data about recurring issues to then optimize the workflow the more the production progresses
  • Attending pipeline meetings or arrange them yourself should major technical issues arise 
  • Collaborating and planning ahead with other Lighting and Compositing Supervisors to implement a new workflow for future productions
  • Lead on recruiting for your lighting and compositing team and supporting other Lighting & Compositing supervisors in interviews too

About You

Must Have:

  • Must have had previous experience as lighting and compositing lead/supervisor 
  • Must have extensive experience in full CG non-realistic lighting for animation or as a Lighting & Compositing artist
  • Excellent understanding of lighting, from creative to technical 
  • Excellent understanding of compositing in particular grading
  • Strong leadership, motivation and coaching skills
  • Great communicator and confident organisational skills
  • Knowledge of Maya and Nuke
  • Strong eye for detail

Bonus Points:

  • Knowledge of scripting in Python
  • Knowledge of After Effects and its particle system plugin - Particular for 2DFX
  • Previous experience in animation for a TV series
  • Background as a generalist to better understand other departments and efficiently communicate with them
